Hera was the wife and one of the three sisters of Zeus, in the Olympian pantheon. Her Roman counterpart was Juno. Portrayed as majestic and solemn, often enthroned, and crowned with the polos, a high cylindrical crown worn by several of the Great Goddesses, Hera sometimes appeared with a pomegranate in her hand, a symbol of fertility. She was known for her jealous and vengeful nature against Zeus's lovers and offspring, as well as mortals who crossed her, such as Paris, who chose Aphrodite as being the most beautiful goddess. The cow, the lion and the peacock are considered sacred to her. Hera was most known as the matron goddess but presided over weddings as well. She was also worshiped as a virgin who renewed her virginity annually, in rites that were not to be spoken of. She was the supreme Greek goddess, patron of marriage and childbirth.
